Did a wood-burned piece for my friend, Brandon (his work is posted below), and his wife as an art trade at the end of last quarter. In exchange I got one of his awesome posters which is hanging in my living room and it had been awhile since I did wood-burning! My goal by the time I graduate is to have artwork from my colleagues to hang in my new apartment wherever I’m living and do artwork in return for them.
It’s on a 12”x24” panel and he’s a Missouri nerd because that’s his home state.
Sorry it’s been awhile since I updated. I’ve been busy with my freelance job already, but I’m working on new stuff :)

New photo set of my laser etched piece of “The Red String of Fate”.  Laser etched illustrations onto four separate 12”x24” wood panels.  It was an experimentation and the wood grain added a surprising effect that I like.

Photographed by Andrew Hefter.

Better run, better run, outrun my gun.
First panel is 9”x11”, second is 7.5”x11”, and the third is 20”x11”.  I think my next experiment is laser cutting along with laser burning.  Thank goodness for free access to the laser shop here.

Burned burned burned.  I have the other two panels as well and I’m pretty pleased with the turn out :)  Gonna see if I can get some wood stain finishes or just use some transparent acrylic washes in certain areas.  I’ll figure it out tomorrow in class!

The project that took me forever to finally share!  It’s the Chinese folktale of The Red String of Fate, but I also took the characters and put them in modernized environments.  It’s based on the Chinese wall panels that you can arrange to tell a story, but of course these would be better when placed in sequential order.
This project was a huge experiment because it was my first time getting my artwork laser burned into wood, rather than burning my illustrations into each panel by hand.  With this technique, I can burn out large areas to create a layered effect.  It was quite a process and anything that I’m unsure about with this project, I can change when working on my new project, which I’m working on currently utilizing the same technique.  Of course, I couldn’t have done any of this successfully without the help from a friend of mine who really took the time to help me understand what to do and how to get it ready for the laser shop.
Each panel is 12”x24”.  I will probably stain them, but my professor wanted to preserve this set, so I’ll be getting an new set of panels burned to experiment with materials.  For the first time, I’m really happy with the turn out.  Click to full view so you can actually see details if you’d like.

I think I’m done.  I just want to cut the corners so they’re rounded and scan the entire piece in, but I can’t do either of these things until the buildings open again in a week.
Ink, colored pencil, vine charcoal, and Mod Podge to lift the hair and lips from everything else.

Playing with fire part is complete.  I’m letting my hand rest and as it relaxes, I am mulling over if I should add color and shading.  If I do, it would be very minimal.
What do you all think?

The wood burning is back!…and GPOY.
Obviously I’m back in Savannah working on some artwork.  You can get a little hint of what I’m burning right now.

My final for Survey of Illustration!  I may still work on it, but for now, it’s due today and I’m happy with where it is now, especially since it involved a lot of new techniques and experimentation.
I’m so exhausted…I don’t know if I’ll touch any paint this Spring Break o___o
Wood, wood burning and acrylic paint!
EDIT: And it’s Pi day!  So today is all about my kitten except unfortunately, she wasn’t born in March, she was born in August…and I can’t do much for her except let her do what she wants and she already does that…

Scanned before I start painting.  Completed the woodburning this afternoon.  I’ll begin painting tomorrow.  The bottom looks busy but it’s because it’s not painted yet so it’s all line art right now.
Time to dive head first and lose myself in my work.  Los Campesinos! and a drive to get these projects done will save me.

Nicer wood makes a difference for this second attempt for sure!  I used the right nib this time, but because of the grain, it’s hard to get a nice fluid line.  But I’m getting more confident.
I just need to keep my hair out of the way or it will get burned.  I already have a few burnt strands…

Woodburning practice. I think I’m going to do a few more before I begin my final project.
It’s kind of scary since you can’t really erase a burned line.
